Learning to Be Still
“Be still, and know that I am God;…” Psalm 46:10
“And Jesus answered and said to her, Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42
Being still in todays busy and always connected world is a challenge, but not impossible. The art of “being still” has to first be chosen and then practiced. Choosing a time to try to be still when the probability of being interrupted is high is not the right time. Choosing a time to be still with tools of busyness (phone, computer, TV) sitting within reach or ear shot is a good way to increase your chances of failure.
1. You need to choose a time to be still in which the world that you live in will most likely be quiet for at least 30 minutes.
2. You need to go into that time separating yourself from all items that can possibly distract you.
Spend the first few minutes in prayer acknowledging the God you are spending time with. Read Psalm 18 to see how David acknowledged God if you need help with that (Don’t miss what David says in verse 1: “I will love You, O Lord…).
Spend the next few minutes in prayer thanking and praising God for what He has provided you in life.
Spend the next few minutes surrendering your will to God and submitting to His will.
Ask for forgiveness for any sin that you are aware of in your life.
Lay before Him your dreams, desires, needs and thoughts.
Pray for others.
Ask for the Holy Spirit’s guidance as you read the Bible.
Read the Bible slowly and listen for His direction and teaching. Keep a notebook next to you to write down anything you learn or questions you have about what you are reading.
When there is something you read in the Bible that convicts you or causes you to question how you are living or how to live, talk it out and listen and watch for answers.
Close by thanking God for the time spent with Him and ask Him to open your eyes and heart for His desires for you for the remainder of the day.
Practice this every day and make this time a sacred habit in your life! Unleash Greatness in 2017!
