I Want to Know What Love Is
“Let love be without hypocrisy…” Romans 12:9
We love to be loved and to love. The two greatest commandments in the Bible that every single other command hangs on is to love God and love our neighbors as ourselves. Jesus tells us to love one another as He has loved us.
Here Paul writes to let our love be without hypocrisy. May it not be fake, but rather sincere. What is sincere love? The sincerest love, the purest love is God Himself as 1 John 4:8 tells us that God is love. Romans 5:8 states that God demonstrated His love toward us that while we were yet sinners (imperfect, broken, shameful, unable to hit the mark set, rebellious, law breakers) Christ died for us. There is no greater love than God and Jesus’ sacrifice for each one of us.
Sincere love, pure love, love without hypocrisy is wrapped up in all you are learning of God through Christ.
How about that person that sinned against you? God demonstrated His love toward us while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8). Loving the sinner often times means you will absorb the impact of the sin. If you truly absorb it then you truly can continue to love them in spite of their sin and continue with sincerity.
That person who just gave you a dirty look? Love bears all things (1 Corinthians 13:7). Love bears the dirty look, bears the harsh word, bears with selfish behavior and continues with sincerity.
You boss gives you more work, which causes you to sacrifice more than your co-workers? By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us (1 John 3:16). Love will sacrifice despite “fairness” and continue in sincerity.
You are continually angry with someone’s continued inability at a certain skill or performance? Don’t think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to EACH one a measure of faith…but all the members do not have the same function (Romans 12:3-4) Do you want to be loved only for your abilities or for your abilities AND YOUR inabilities? If you are unable to love people who aren’t perfect then you do not really know what love is. Stick with them despite their shortcomings and continue to love with sincerity.
Love isn’t always going to make sense and love isn’t always going to be easy. It doesn’t make sense that the sinless one pays the penalty for all the sinners. The cross was the most brutal and excruciating way to die. It doesn’t make sense but I’m thankful for His grace. It wasn’t easy but I’m thankful for His strength. May others begin to thank you for your grace and for your strength by loving them without hypocrisy.
