Am I Ever Going to Change? Part I

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold all things have become new.”  2 Corinthians 5:17

The more New Year’s days you’ve lived gives you a good idea about how different you will personally be come December 31, 2018.  Many have lost hope in making New Year’s resolutions because they already know they won’t keep them and thus they won’t change.  They want to change.  They want to be different.  They want to achieve goals.  They want to develop new skills.  Grow relationships.  Deepen their characters.  Yet somehow they already know when they look in the mirror 364 days from now they will be the exact same person that they were in 2017.  Am I ever going to change?

Why is it that when we believe in Jesus as our Savior that we are declared to be a “new creation?”  If I’m a new creation then why am I not changed?  Why do I continue to struggle with the same things I have always struggled with?  Why do I know what I want to do, but I continually do something else (typically the exact opposite!).  Do I not have enough faith or is God not truly who He says He is?

Now that you are in Christ you are now in good standing with God.  You have gone from being an enemy of God to His sons and daughters sharing in the inheritance of Christ (John 1:12, Ephesians 1:11, 1 Peter 1:4).  You are therefore no longer condemned (Romans 8:1).

You now stand in a place in which you were never able to stand in on your own apart from Christ.  The reason you are standing where you are with the promises that are so bestowed upon the one standing where you are is because you are in Christ.  Because you now stand in this place in which you have never stood before you now have the capability of heading in a direction that you were never able to head in before, but only if you decide to walk in the newness of life.

What do I mean by that?  2 Corinthians 5:17 states that for those in Christ the “old things have passed away.”  That means the old you died.  Colossians 3:3 puts it a bit more bluntly: “For you died,…”  In this new direction that you and I now have the ability to walk in we walk in it in the Spirit (which is the new life we now possess) and not in the flesh (the old life that supposedly has died).  You can’t walk in the new life in the old ways.

We'll speak more tomorrow on some examples of seeing this change happen in your life, but for now take some time and make a list of all your old ways that continually rear their ugly head in your life and hold you back from changing.  Then lift those things up to God in prayer, ask for forgiveness, ask for His wisdom to see them destroyed and truly put to death this year.  Then take some time praising and thanking Him for saving you, blessing you with the future promises of an inheritance in heaven with Christ and for the ability to not only walk in this new life, but to understand it.
