Have you ever watched a fight movie and realized that the main character is outrageously unprepared for the fight he is about to face at the end of the movie. what does it take for them to get strong enough and confident enough to face the big fight...? Simple, an epic training montage set to upbeat empowering music. If only it were that easy! since sin entered the world and with it pain, turmoil, and suffering we are in the constant presence of spiritual warfare, it could be a sin, an illness or an actual attack on us or our families. but we need to remember two things that God is with us through the fight and that He can use that fight to make us stronger and teach us to hold our ground through future struggles.
Be alert and of sober mind. your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen
1 Peter 5:8-10
Here Peter is writing to believers as a warning but also as an encouragement. He warns us to be vigilant and ready to defend against the attacks of the devil. We have heard from Pastor Todd and from previous day's devotions that we can defend against these attacks as Jesus did by the memorization of scripture. Peter continues with comfort that no matter what fight you are in, you are not in it alone. that the family of believers throughout the world is going through the same thing.
Verse 10 is where the encouragement and hope is given. I know through my own walk and struggle with sin and pain you feel beaten and dragged through the mud. It's easy to feel depressed and like there is no coming back. As verse 10 says through God's grace, we will suffer for a little bit. But God will restore us and make us strong, firm, and steadfast. Although it was never God's plan for us to suffer or to even be in this fight. He can use it to train us and to make us stronger. so not only will we be ready for the next fight but we will be able to aid others through their fights.
