Let’s face it strong language definitely turns heads. One dictionary defined strong language as: “speech that states ideas forcefully, sometimes using words that may be considered offensive.” Strong language typically is used when you are extremely angry or upset. It is also used when you are in a heated verbal battle over something that you are both passionate about, but clearly on opposite sides. Strong language is used often times to intimidate or bully or you are so emotionally spent that this feels like the only way you can get your point across. Just listen a bit and you’ll hear strong language all around you. Does God also use strong language? Yes, just not the kind you and I may be used to….
Those that have gone through the 10-week Rooted Discipleship study are encouraged to memorize verses weekly. In week 4 we are to memorize Philippians 4:6-7, which is: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything with prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
When I was working on memorizing these verses, I repeated the verse to myself and I said early on in the process I said part of the verse like this….and the peace of God which surpasses understanding….
I re-read the verse to make sure I had stated it correctly and I realized I left out the word ALL. The peace of God, which surpasses ALL understanding. Not just some understanding, but ALL understanding. I’m glad I said the verse incorrectly, because when I realized what word I had left out it made me think for quite some time. ALL understanding. That is an awfully bold claim for God to make, surpasses ALL understanding. It is some really strong language.
Many times when I’m anxious or struggling it is in large part due to the fact that I just can’t understand or I just can’t figure things out in the moment. Going to God in prayer with these anxious thoughts and struggles means that what God has planned in these moments is even beyond my OWN understanding. ALL understanding includes mine. Thankfully, God is so gracious that over time He has often times revealed to me why and has helped me to come to an understanding.
Based on God’s work in the past I have learned to trust that either one day God will bring me to an understanding or that I trust in His word that despite my lack of understanding that He will guard my heart and mind.
Our Spiritual Battles aren’t always going to make perfect sense or any sense in some cases, but one thing we can be sure of when we bring it to God…..His peace will surpass ALL understanding and He WILL guard our hearts and minds through the loving, powerful, merciful, gracious, understanding hand of Jesus. Trust in the Strong Language of God! It is boldly proclaimed throughout His Word!
